What should I expect from the allergy appointment?
Here are some recommendations on how to make the best out of your visit with an allergist:
- Try to see a connection between the symptoms and what trigger them did your eyes start itching after you pet the cat? Did you have a rash after a dog licked you? Do you get congested only after sleeping on the guest bed?
- You may also want to keep track of the occurrences of allergic reactions. Yes – rash happens every time the dog licks me. Yes – I sneeze every time I get exposed to the grass pollen. No – I am congested most of the time, it just gets worse after sleeping on the guest bed.
- You want to find out which measures make your problem go away. For example, a good way to tell if this is an allergy is to take OTC antihistamines. Zyrtec, Allegra, Aysal, and Benadryl are the examples of medications that block histamine (a substance produced in the body when allergic reaction happens)
- If you suspect that some foods cause the problem, it is better to avoid that food to see if all symptoms clear up. Sometimes, if the symptom is not too severe, it can be hard to detect which food you have a reaction to. Or, in case of wheat allergy, it is just hard to avoid it completely.
You should know that the body immune system can react even to the tiny amount of a protein –even a trace of the wheat flour r left on the cutting board can trigger an allergic reaction. If elimination is not one hundred percent, the symptoms may persist and give you a false feeling that it is not that food.
My child has too many ear infections. Can that be allergy?
Children have allergy symptoms that are different from adults. For years, scientists believed that baby is born with a “naive immune system” and the allergy does not start for a while. Now we know this is not true. In fact, even a pregnant woman’s diet or exposure to an allergen during a pregnancy can trigger an atopy in a baby and cause severe food allergies and environmental allergies later.
So, a baby can have allergy symptoms even as young as 4–6-month-old. Indeed, ear fluid that builds up and causes ear pain is a frequent symptom that can be misdiagnosed as an ear infection. In allergy, the fluid cannot drain through the Eustachian tube to the nose due to congestion while in the actual ear infection, the fluid in the inner ear is a part of a bacterial inflammation.
It is normal for a child who has siblings or goes to the daycare to have 3-4 infections a year (can be a cold, an ear infection and a flu). These infections universally cause fever in addition to the ear problems whereas an allergy causes congestion, ear pain but no fever.
It is reasonable to ask for the referral to an Allergist if your child is getting back-to-back antibiotics without any improvement of the symptoms. Parents who have allergies usually recognize allergy in their baby faster, only because they have symptoms themselves.
Can I take my child to an Adult Allergist?
Allergy specialist’s cross-train to see adults and kids. So basically, an allergist works as a Family Practice where all ages are welcome. On the other hand, some physicians prefer to see kids only or adults only. Also, allergy has different symptoms and treatments for adults and children that is why some specialists work as Adult Allergist or Pediatric Allergist.
